WHAT HAPPENS AFTER I'M BOOKED IN?

After you have paid your deposit you are booked in and we are committed to providing our service.  Around week 37 of your pregnancy we will send you a container, a cooler bag and ice packs and ask that the remaining balance be settled.  You should place the ice packs in the freezer ready to be taken to the hospital.
When you go in to labour take the container, cooler bag and ice packs to the hospital with you.  Send a text or call to inform us that you have gone into labour so that we are aware that a collection will need to be made soon.  Our collection time in between 4-12 hours (usually faster) and we aim to have your products processed and back with you within 48 hours (usually faster).  Have your birth partner inform us when the baby has arrived.  Remember to include in your birth plans that you intend to keep your placenta and inform the midwife at the hospital.  Ensure your placenta is placed into the cool bag within 30 minutes of its delivery.  Instructions are included in the pack.  Before you know if you will be at home with your beautiful new baby, and have your pills! Hey presto!

CAN I HAVE A WATER BIRTH?

Yes. However the placenta must be birthed on dry land. Should the placenta be birthed in the water then it would be unsuitable for consumption due to possible contaminants in the water.

CAN I HAVE MY PLACENTA ENCAPSULATED IF I HAVE A CAESARIAN SECTION?

Yes this has no impact on your placenta. Just ensure your care team are aware that you wish to keep your placenta.

ARE THERE ANY REASONS WHY THE HOSPITAL WILL NOT LET ME KEEP MY PLACENTA?

This is very rare. If there are significant abnormalities of your placenta, the healthcare team may send your placenta for further examination. Other conditions such as signs of infection during labour may deem your placenta unsuitable for consumption.

WHAT IF MY PLACENTA IS STAINED WITH MECONIUM?

Meconium is the sticky, tar-like poo that your baby passes in its first few days. Sometimes the baby passes meconium in the womb or as it is born and this may stick to the placenta. In these cases the placenta will be thoroughly cleaned and stripped of membranes and we will only offer Steamed Dried method, ensuring all bacteria is killed.

ARE THERE ANY TIMES WHEN I SHOULD NOT TAKE MY CAPSULES?

As the Steamed Dried Capsules are based on principles from Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is not recommended that you take your capsules when you have a fever, flu or cold due to the 'yang' warming properties. I recommend buying a Placenta Essence or Tincture to compliment the Steamed Dried Capsules or alternatively purchasing the 50/50 option for capsules as opposed to just the Steamed Dried method.

WHAT AREA DO YOU COVER?

We are based in Glasgow and serve the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (Southern General Maternity Hospital), The Royal Maternity Hospital and Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley.  We also collect from home births in and around Glasgow.  Our fundamental aim is to help mothers experience the benefits of placenta encapsulation and we will of course travel further upon request so if you don't live in Glasgow but are interested in encapsulation give us a message and we will see if we can help! If we are unable to travel we are part of a network of talented birth workers and specialists and can put you in touch with someone in your area.

HOW MANY CAPSULES WILL I GET?

Placenta size is related to the weight of your baby and all are as unique and beautiful as the baby they were attached to.  The Simple Dried Method of encapsulation yields slightly more capsules but on average mothers receive between 90-200 capsules.

HOW DO I PAY?

We believe placenta encapsulation should be accessible to all and we have therefore introduced a "pay up" scheme where you can pay a little each month if this helps.  When you book in we ask for a non-refundable £50 deposit. When we deliver your kit at around 4 weeks before your due date we do require full payment of your chosen products. If for any reason your Placenta is deemed unsuitable for encapsulation (for example if it is taken to pathology) we will refund the full amount minus the deposit to you.

HOW FAR IN ADVANCE SHOULD I BOOK IN?

As we take our health and safety practises very seriously, we will only ever process one placenta at any given time.  This obviously means there is a physical limit to the amount of capsules we can process at any one time.  To avoid disappointment we advise you book at least 4 weeks before your due date (if not sooner - babies come when they want to come!) to allow us time to talk your through our process and answer any queries.  Don't worry if you have left it to the last minute - get in touch and we will see if we can help.
